Service Project Ideas for Schools

Here are some potential project ideas for service in schools. The most important first step is to ask your school contact what they need done, and you could offer these as ideas if they aid the conversation:

  • Level books in the classroom - can save a lot of time for teachers

  • School supply drive at church - sort donations and potentially place in classrooms (get list from the school)

  • Teacher/staff appreciation gift baskets/bags - supplies could be purchased or part of a donation drive (tip: you suggest a gift idea and invite feedback — gift cards are always desired)

  • Decorate and stock the teachers lounge - prepare coffee station, leave non-perishable goodies, fill the fridge with drinks, etc.

  • Locker clean out - clear trash, sanitize, note broken lockers, etc.

  • Organize in the library - i.e. book bindings

  • Prep sports equipment - clean, pump up balls, organize the closet, etc.

  • Teachers sign-up for small volunteer teams (4-5 people) to do whatever they need - extra hands to clean, organize, hang posters, etc. Buy the teacher lunch or coffee.

  • Help with a food drive/distribution if the school has their own food pantry - bag up donations and distributing to families

  • Deep cleaning of school facilities - including washing windows, changing air filters

  • Minor painting/staining/repair jobs - could be indoor or outdoor (school will know which are allowed based on union rules)

  • Landscaping - weeding, mulching, planting in the gardens, etc.

  • Pick-up trash on school grounds

  • School gardens - Clean up gardens OR build raised beds OR donate and assemble a greenhouse (depends on if school has or wants school gardens)

  • Decorate bulletin boards in halls and/or classrooms
